Schoop's Hamburgers named Best Hamburger

Not all hamburgers are made the same. And once you taste a Schoop’s burger with its signature crunchy edges that hang over the bun, you won't look at other burgers the same again. The meat is ground fresh every day. Patties are handmade the same as they have been since the first Schoop’s opened in the Region in 1948.

NORTHWEST, Indiana. (WTHR) — Schoop's Hamburgers takes the gold medal for best fast food in the state. The restaurant, which has been around since the '40s, is located in northwest Indiana near Chicago.
"There’s this unsinkable, workaday charm to Indiana’s industrialized northwest corner, the part with all the smokestacks next to Chicago, hugging the southern shores of Lake Michigan, and if you’re looking for one place to sum up the area’s suspended-in-time, rugged/homey energy, drop by Schoop’s," Food and Wine wrote about the Indiana joint.

The 20 best burgers in Chicago’s suburbs — where giant patties may reign, but don’t win

PUBLISHED: NICK KINDELSPERGER
CHICAGO TRIBUNE | SEP 18, 2019 | 10:06 AM
With beef grease still coursing through my veins, I released a list of the best burgers in Chicago back in February. For one glorious minute I sat content at my desk, happy that I got the chance to highlight what I thought were the meatiest and most alluring burgers in the area. Then the emails came. Dozens upon dozens of people sent screeds angrily pointing out that I had skipped their favorite joint and was therefore an idiot. Who cared that I devoured 71 burgers in less than a month? I had apparently missed a few places.

Right around my 50th burger, I began to dream in ground beef. You'd imagine that devouring so many would result in some fat-fueled nightmare, that grease would have clogged my brain and saturated my blood stream. But I felt lucid and sharp, closer than ever to understanding the mystery of America's favorite food. (Call it burger enlightenment, if you will.)

Perhaps the Region gold standard for hamburgers, no less a food writing luminary than Kevin Pang praised Schoop’s as a “brawny Chicago-area classic.” For nearly seven decades, steelworkers, oil workers and other Region rats have chomped down on the distinctively crisp-edged griddle-seared burgers. Like the Region, they’re big and burly.

The Best Fast Food in Every State

PUBLISHED: David Landsel August 26, 2019
There’s this unsinkable, workaday charm to Indiana’s industrialized northwest corner, the part with all the smokestacks next to Chicago, hugging the southern shores of Lake Michigan, and if you’re looking for one place to sum up the area’s suspended-in-time, rugged/homey energy, drop by Schoop’s, around since the 1940s, with locations throughout the region. In other places, burgers and fries are an over-the-counter type thing—here, the old ways are still appreciated, you can still sit down and give your order to a classically no-nonsense waitress, there are giant chocolate malts served up in glass, cheeseburgers topped with relish and chopped onion, an abundance of curly fries, and house made chili. Slow down, and get into the vibe. (Schoop’s Hamburgers)

Dave Sharp celebrates 30 years in the Schoop's family

MICHIGAN CITY — Good food. Good service. And hands-on family participation.
According to Dave Sharp, owner of two Schoop's Hamburgers franchise locations, that's the secret to his restaurants' success.

It all began for the 77-year-old Sharp in 1985 as he looked for viable income for himself, his wife, Bonnie, and two boys still at home.

Born and raised in Whiting and living in Griffith, Sharp was happily working as head of security at Inland Steel when suddenly he found himself unemployed, despite a tenure of 15 years, when the company conducted massive layoffs.

Local burger chains? McDonald's, of course, comes immediately to mind — it's Oak Brook-based, West Loop-bound and packs a whopper of a punch culturally, economically and gastronomically (here and around the world). But there are other homegrown burger joints out there.

Far, far smaller than McDonald's, Burger King or other big burger boys, these Chicago-area businesses strive to stand out by offering customers a lot of choices in burgers, toppings and extras. Many emphasize humanely raised meats and organic products. And a number blur the line between fast food and fast-casual with table service and real cutlery.
